Wage rates. Regulation of Wages (General) (Amendment) Order, 2026 — Legal Notice 108, Kenya Gazette Supplement 160 of 26 June 2026, in operation from 1 May 2026; and for farms, Legal Notice 109. Transcribed from the gazette. Monthly rates are exclusive of house allowance; daily and hourly rates are inclusive of it. Reviewed .

Read down, not across

The order sets three separate rates for every job — by the hour, by the day and by the month. They are not versions of each other.

A general labourer in Nairobi is gazetted at 18,047.40 a month and 868.44 a day. Divide the monthly figure down and you get about 593. The day rate is higher on purpose: a day's casual work carries no leave, no notice and no benefits.

So compare a monthly employee against the monthly figure, and a casual against the daily or hourly one. This calculator never converts between them.

House allowance

The order says it in its own heading. The monthly figures are exclusive of house allowance — it goes on top. The daily and hourly figures are inclusive of it.

Treat a monthly minimum as all-in and you are about 15% short.

Need a hand?

A calculator answers the arithmetic. The judgement — what a contract provides, how a policy applies, what a particular case needs — is a conversation.

ACCUREX advises on exactly this, every day. Talk to an HR consultant.

Common questions

A casual is paid only for days worked — no annual leave, no sick pay, no notice, no public holidays. The order prices the day rate above the monthly equivalent to reflect that.

No. The order states that monthly wages are exclusive of house allowance and that daily and hourly rates are inclusive of it.

The agricultural order, Legal Notice 109, which sets one national figure rather than splitting by area and publishes monthly and daily rates only. Switch the wage order at the top.

There are thresholds in the Employment Act after which the engagement is treated differently, and they depend on the facts of the engagement. The calculator flags when your day count is approaching that territory — what to do about it is a conversation with an HR consultant.

Rates checked at the point of engagement

PiPO HRIS holds the gazetted floor against each job and area, so a rate below it is caught when the worker is engaged.
