Practical guidance on HR, payroll and workforce operations.

Practical guidance on HR, payroll and workforce operations — written from implementation work, not from a content calendar.

These pages collect what we keep having to explain: how to evaluate a workforce system, what actually breaks a payroll cycle, why appraisal cycles stall, and what a casual workforce needs that a standard HR process cannot give it. They are written from consulting and implementation work rather than assembled for search, which is why there are five of them and not fifty.

How these are written

Everything on these pages comes out of implementation work: the questions organisations ask during scoping, the things that turn out to be broken during data migration, and the failures that recur across clients often enough to be structural rather than unlucky.

That has two consequences worth stating. The first is that they are opinionated — they tell you what we think goes wrong and why, including where the honest answer is that the software is not the problem. The second is that they are not comprehensive: there is no attempt here to cover every HR topic, only the ones we have something specific to say about.

Where a page touches statutory matters, it describes process and controls rather than publishing rates, bands or thresholds. Those change, and a marketing site is the wrong place to maintain them — a stale figure would be worse than none at all.

We publish when we have something worth saying. If you want a specific topic covered — or want the detail behind any of these pages for your own evaluation — ask us and we will answer directly rather than pointing you at an article.
